UPCOMING EVENTS

ISSUE RELEASE PARTY!!!!

Washington Square welcomes you to our spring reading on Saturday, February 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The reading takes place at the Vernon Creative Writers House, 58 W. 10th Street.

There is a $5 admission fee. For an additional $10, you will receive a one-year subscription to the journal and a raffle ticket for a prize drawing later in the evening.

The reading will feature writers whose works appeared in the recent issue of Washington Square: the poet Ed Hirsch, author of five poetry collections, most recently Special Orders; the poet C.K. Williams, author of thirteen poetry collections, most recently Selected Poems; the fiction writer Glenn Kinnen, author of Bobos; and the fiction writer Sam Miller whose work has appeared in The Rumpus and The Minnesota Review.

There will be a reception following the reading with beer from Brooklyn Brewery, wine and sparkling water. Throughout the reading we will announce the raffle winners who will receive gift certificates, faculty-designed artwork, and signed copies of celebrated works by NYU Creative Writing Program faculty including Jonathan Safran Foer, Darin Strauss, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Chuck Wachtel, among others. There will also be a silent auction to get your hands on an item of curiosity!

Since its inception in 1995, Washington Square has published such prominent writers as Anne Carson, Stephen Dunn, Ilya Kaminsky, Rick Moody, Donald Revell, Charles Simic, and Alice Quinn, as well as many emerging writers, including some who are now winning awards for their first books.

We welcome you to a festive evening that is open to the public. Please invite friends and come celebrate all of our hard work at Washington Square.

Cheers,

NEWS

Congratulations to Colum McCann for winning the 2009 National Book Award! An excerpt from his novel, Let the Great World Spin, is published in our current issue.

The Winter/Spring 2009 issue has been reviewed by NewPages.com. You can check out their review here.

In 2008-2009 Washington Square held a reading at The New York Public Library and held a benefit at the Lillian Vernon Writer's House with readings by John Yau, Rudolph Delson, and Eduardo Jimenez Mayo. We redesigned our website and created a group on Facebook.

2007-2008 also brought many new changes to Washington Square. Sam Potts of McSweeney's was hired to redesign the magazine, revitalizing its pages with a bold graphic cover and fresh style.

Creative Writing Professors Matthew Rohrer and Darin Strauss were added to the editorial staff as Executive Editors, providing valuable faculty guidance and support for our graduate student editors.

Washington Square now also includes transcriptions of New Salon interviews that have taken place at Vernon Writers House. The fall issue featured Dan Chiasson in conversation with Alice Quinn; the spring issue featured Peter Carey in conversation with Darin Strauss.

In addition, a new Portfolio provides space for visual artists and photographers to display their work; photographs by Thomas Sayers Ellis were published in the spring issue.

Washington Square has a renewed focus on translation, presenting readers with international writers like Fabricio Carpinejar and Manoel de Barros in their original languages and English.
